The Walter Jones Golf Classic began in 1995 as a tribute to Walter Jones, a 29-year veteran ASHP staff member who dedicated himself to the success of pharmacy students. His true affection and interest in the students serving as ASHP Executive Residents had a significant and lasting impact on these young people, who wanted to do something to remember Walter.

The result was a golf tournament benefitting a fund in his name, the Walter Jones Memorial Pharmacy Student Financial Aid Fund. The fund makes it possible for the ASHP Foundation to offer awards of $2,500 to the 12 recipients of the ASHP Student Leadership Awards each year. Last year, the golf tournament raised more than $30,000 for the Walter Jones Fund.
 
The golf tournament raises money through sponsors, donations made directly to the fund, and through a portion of each golfer's registration fee. The remaining portion of the registration fees goes to cover the cost of the tournament.
