Memories of Walter

Executive Residents Remember “Big Slim”
The Walter Jones Golf Classic and Memorial Pharmacy Student Financial Aid Fund exist because individuals who served as ASHP Executive Residents wanted to do something to honor Walter after his death. Here are some of their memories of Walter:

“I owe such a debt of gratitude to Walter Jones for the interest he took in my personal and professional development as an ASHP Executive Resident. Walter was there to listen, was quick with a joke and always helped you learn a ‘life lesson’ when you interacted with him. He was a great mentor.”
―William M. Ellis, R.Ph., M.S., Executive Director/CEO, American Pharmacists Association Foundation

“Walter was the ultimate mentor, taking each ‘Lil Slim’ who entered the executive residency under his wing, always making each feel special and valued in the organization. His gift of insight, rich relationships with staff and members, and knowledge of everything going on in the ASHP organization provided perspective, depth of understanding and encouragement. He was THE MAN, and we were all so lucky to have had the advantage of his tutelage.”
―Sharon M. Enright, Senior Manager-Health Science Advisory Services, Managed Care & Medicare Part D, Ernst & Young, LLP

“There are so many fond memories of Walter, who was like a Dad, brother, and best friend to me during my residency and for years after. Walter teased me that his goal was to keep me on the straight-and-narrow, and we did a lot of things together with his son, Vic. Golf was a big part of that. My father was a big golfer, and it was a connecting point for him and Walter when they would visit. Of course, I was not a very good golfer, but my Dad always appreciated that ‘Big Slim’ got me to the course every week or two to give it a try. It’s been over 25 years since I met Big Slim, and this year I finally took golf lessons. The best shot I had this year was with a Walter Jones golf tournament ball! So
enjoy, and have a great event!”
―Marsha K. Millonig, M.B.A., R.Ph., President & CEO, Catalyst Enterprises, LLC

“Walter Jones provided an ‘invisible ingredient’ for ASHP Executive Residents that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget. I'll never forget the first time I met him. I was sitting in the ASHP Board Room sipping an afterwork refreshment – and he appeared in the doorway and said, ‘Stand up and let me take a look at you ... Are you
as good as they say you are?’ That interaction was the first of many I had with Walter during my residency, and subsequently while I worked for ASHP – often during ‘evening seminars’ with he and Dr. Oddis. After I completed the residency, I watched him offer his ‘wing’ to each successive Executive Resident that was willing to take him up on his offer.  The practical wisdom he shared was invaluable, and while I miss his presence in this world, memories of his friendship and counsel will always be with me!”
―Teresa Ann Miller, Pharm.D., FCSHP, Senior Consulting Pharmacist, Pharmacy Policy Branch, Pharmacy Benefits Division, California Department of Health Care Services

“Walter always said, ‘Be careful who you associate with because you don't want to become like them!’ and ‘Use a firm handshake, Slim, it'll tell people you mean business.’ Basically, Walter taught me how to shake hands properly and reinforced that it was okay to have a firm handshake even if I was a woman! He also taught me that I should be very careful with the company I keep because they would either suck the life out of me or help me achieve my goals and that was a fine line.”
