About the Center Director

Richard S. Walling, R.Ph., M.H.A.
Director, Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership


Richard Walling began his pharmacy career as a community pharmacist after graduating from the University of Iowa in 1974. After 2 years in community practice, he accepted an appointment with the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHS). His PHS career spanned 31 years, starting with clinical pharmacist assignments at the PHS Hospitals in Staten Island, New York, and Seattle, Washington. He also served at the Indian Health Services Hospital in Fort Defiance, Arizona, before taking an administrative assignment in the Operations Division of the PHS Commissioned Corps in Washington, DC. Following the administrative/management assignment in the Office of the Surgeon General, he went on to service in the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Global Health Affairs as Director, Western Hemisphere and Middle East. In addition, he served as PHS Chief Pharmacist Officer to the Surgeon General.

Rear Admiral Walling retired from the Commissioned Corps in July 2005. He became Director of the Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership in December 2006.
