Sara J. White

Meet faculty member Sara White and listen to her welcome message!

Sara J. White, M.S., FASHP, is a retired director of pharmacy and the primary faculty member for this course. Since retiring in 2003, she has published a series in the American Journal of Heath-System Pharmacy entitled "Success Skills" and co-edited the ASHP Pharmacy Leadership Field Guide, Cases and Advice for Everyday Situations and Letters to Young Pharmacists. Along with Toby Clark, she authored Wisdom From the Pharmacy Leadership Trenches. She has developed and recorded video series of 20 "Conversations With Health-System Pharmacy’s Most Influential Leaders" for the ASHP Foundation. Sara has continued to speak on pharmacy leadership at the local, state and national levels.

Sara was an ASHP Foundation Scholar-in-Residence in 2004, during which she developed her landmark study, "The Pharmacy Leadership Crisis," which led to a John C. Webb Lecture, an article in AJHP and the creation of the ASHP Foundation Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership as well as all of its related leadership training programs.

She served as Stanford Hospital and Clinics' Director of Pharmacy and Clinical Professor, UCSF School of Pharmacy from 1992 to 2003. She was Associate Director of Pharmacy and Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1972-1992. She trained more than 100 residents during her career.  

Sara earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Oregon State University and a master's degree in pharmacy from Ohio State University. She completed an ASHP-accredited residency at the Ohio State University Hospitals and Clinics.

She has served as ASHP president and received the 2006 Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award.
