2007-2008 Pain Management Traineeship
“I loved my preceptor and I could say ‘I found a preceptor for life.’ Since the ASHP Foundation Pain Management training, I feel much more confident in the clinical work I am doing with pain management.”
--Rabia S. Atayee, Pharm.D., BCPS, Assistant Clinical Professor, Doris A. Howell Palliative Care Service, University of California, San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, La Jolla, CA
“I especially enjoyed the experiential component of the ASHP Foundation’s Pain Management traineeship. It allowed me to see first-hand the collaborative relationship the pharmacist had developed with the patients, nursing and the medical team. I expanded my pain assessment skills and became more comfortable with initiating and adjusting pain medications. The traineeship enhanced my knowledge and provided me with the tools necessary to improve patient care and pain management within my own institution.”
--Beth Johnston, Pharm.D., Surgery Clinical Pharmacist, St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, Indianapolis, IN
“The traineeship experience has allowed me to further solidify my role as a pain management pharmacist at my institution by providing me with the necessary skills to formulize our Pain Management Team and improve patient care. I felt the most valuable part of the traineeship experience was having hands-on experience at another institution with an established Pain Management Team. As a trainee at UCSF Medical Center, I was able to round with the Orthopaedic Surgery Team and focus on pain management issues as well as provide pharmaceutical care from the beginning to the end. I also enjoyed building a network of pain management pharmacists, who I continue to keep in touch with.”
--Lynn V. Tieu, Pharm.D., BCPS, Clinical Pharmacist I, Pain Management, Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD
2005-2006 Pain Management Traineeship
“I wanted to get more familiar with pain management so I could do a better job with my patients. My knowledge base expanded greatly during my time in the traineeship. I brought back a lot of information and was able to give presentations regarding not just practice methods but also information about emerging treatment regimens, and how the team in Tampa used them. The thing that stayed with me was how [the preceptor] had created a place for a pharmacist on the pain management team and how she interacted with those team members to make sure they had the information they needed to best treat the patient.”
--Melissa Ubbens, Pharm.D., Clinical Pharmacist, General Surgery Division, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC
“I wanted to see how other clinics handle their pain patients. We got to know every member of the multidisciplinary team, which included a psychiatrist, a neurologist, a nurse practitioner, a mental health professional, pharmacists, and pharmacy residents and students. I learned to use adjuvant therapies differently in the traineeship. It gave me more confidence in what I did. It was so worthwhile to see what they did in their clinic – having that hands-on training and having the minds of those who do pain management well at my disposal was very valuable."
