What is the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative?
At this pivotal time, there is an urgent need to create a forward-thinking hospital and health-system pharmacy practice model. ASHP and the ASHP Foundation are sponsoring a Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative that includes a consensus summit, a robust social marketing campaign, and program evaluations.
The goal of this initiative is to significantly advance the health and well-being of patients by developing and disseminating a futuristic practice model that supports the most effective use of pharmacists as direct patient care providers.
PPMI Summit
The Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative Summit took place in November 2010, bringing together more than 150 pharmacist participants to address key outcomes related to the development of a new pharmacy practice model. A number of recommendations came out of the summit.
How will those recommendations be translated into practice? There are a number of "next steps" that are under consideration and which the ASHP Foundation would spearhead. These include:
• Development of assessment tools
• Development of communication tools, such as a Summit video for use on the web and at state meetings, the Midyear, and the ASHP Summer Meeting.
• Publication in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy of the proceedings and background documents.
• Demonstration grants.
