Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Receives $50,000 Award for Excellence in Medication Safety from the ASHP and Cardinal Health Foundations
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio was honored with the 2016 Award for Excellence in Medication Safety by the ASHP Foundation and the Cardinal Health Foundation. The award is the only national honor that recognizes a pharmacist-led interprofessional team for implementing significant institution-wide improvements in medication safety.

ASHP Foundation Releases New 2017 Trends Report to Assist Pharmacy Leaders in Strategic Planning
The ASHP Research and Education Foundation has released the 2017 trends report in its series Pharmacy Forecast 2017: Strategic Planning Advice for Pharmacy Departments in Hospitals and Health Systems. The Pharmacy Forecast reports were created to help pharmacy practice leaders plan effectively for the future.

Nebraska Medicine Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Program Receives ASHP

The ASHP Research and Education Foundation will recognize the recipients of the 2016 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Awards at a special reception held during the ASHP 2016 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. This award program, supported by an educational donation provided by Amgen, Inc., recognizes excellence in pharmacy residency training through recognition of residency programs, preceptors and new preceptors.

C. Michael White Receives ASHP Foundation 2016 Literature Award for Sustained Contributions
C. Michael White, Pharm.D., FCP, FCCP, has been named the recipient of the ASHP Foundation 2016 Literature Award for Sustained Contributions. Dr. White is the department head of pharmacy practice at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. Dr. White has been the co-director of an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Evidence-Based Practice Center since 2007, one of only 13 designated centers in North America.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2016 Recipients of the Master’s Resident Practice-Based Research Grants
The ASHP Research and Education Foundation announced today that funding has been awarded to two pharmacy resident researchers selected earlier this year through the 2016 Master’s Resident Practice-Based Research Grant Program. This program funds practice-based research conducted by residents in ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency programs that combine the completion of a residency and a master’s degree. The funded research supports the ASHP/ASHP Foundation Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) or Ambulatory PAI.

ASHP Foundation Recognizes 2015-2016 Critical Care Traineeship Participants
Seven pharmacists participated in the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s Critical Care Concentrated Traineeship. This ACPE-accredited educational experience aims to train pharmacists to develop and maintain specialized services for the management of critically ill patients. Trainees received both intensive distance and experiential training to prepare them to participate on multidisciplinary patient care teams as the health professional responsible and accountable for patients’ medication-related outcomes.

ASHP Foundation Recognizes 2015-2016 Oncology Traineeship Participants
Four pharmacists participated in the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s Enhanced Oncology Patient Care Traineeship. The traineeship is a five-month educational experience during which pharmacists are trained to develop and maintain specialized services for the management of patients with cancer. Trainees received intensive distance training and 10 days of experiential training. The traineeship aimed to enhance their ability to participate on interprofessional patient care teams as the healthcare professional responsible and accountable for patients’ medication-related outcomes.

ASHP Foundation Recognizes 2015-2016 Advanced Antithrombotic Management Traineeship Participants
Six pharmacists participated in the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s Advanced Antithrombotic Management Traineeship. The Antithrombotic Traineeship is a focused five-month postgraduate program for pharmacists. The primary goal of the traineeship is to prepare pharmacists to establish, maintain, and continuously improve antithrombotic therapy programs that result in optimal patient-level, population and healthcare organization outcomes. Each trainee was matched with a faculty mentor who supported them throughout the program.

ASHP Foundation Recognizes the 2015-2016 Advanced Pain Management Traineeship Participants
Ten pharmacists participated in the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s Advanced Pain Management Traineeship. Optimal management of chronic pain is a critical issue in healthcare. In this five-month, tiered educational initiative, featuring distance education and onsite experiential training, pharmacists were trained to develop and maintain comprehensive services for patients in pain and those with palliative care needs. Trainees learned to lead safe and effective pain management in their
practice setting.

ASHP Foundation Continues to Support Pharmacy Residency Training by Increasing Available Residency Positions
BETHESDA, MD (August 30, 2016) ― There are more than 2,071 residency programs in the United States. In 2016 these programs graduated more than 4,309 PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents. While this is an 8 percent increase from 2015, over 1,776 individuals were unable to obtain a training spot in the 2016 match. The shortage of residency programs denies pharmacists the opportunities and experiences that would better prepare them for work in the healthcare system.

ASHP Foundation Recognizes 2015-2016 Medical Home Traineeship Participants
BETHESDA, MD (August 29, 2016) ― Eight pharmacists participated in the ASHP Research and Education Foundation’s inaugural Medical Home Traineeship, now titled Patient-Centered Ambulatory Care Optimized. During this two-part educational program, participants learned to elevate quality, safety and outcomes in medical homes, clinics, and accountable care organizations. A combination of focused distance and experiential training built competence for trainees to implement services and quality metrics in their organizations to transform patient care and optimize outcomes.

ASHP Foundation Announces 2016 Recipients of the Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grants
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation announced today that funding has been awarded to pharmacy resident researchers who seek to improve patient care by optimizing pharmacists’ roles. The critical healthcare issues that will be studied by the grantees include identifying patients with the highest risk of readmission, outcomes for high-risk chronic opioid users, delivery of medication management, the impact of an HIV PrEP clinic, the effects of packaging on medication adherence rates, and prescribing aspirin to older women as primary stroke prevention. The researchers are recipients of the 2016 ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice-Based Research Grant Program.

ASHP Foundation Hosts Meet-and-Greet Event Featuring Pharmacy Forecast 2016 Editor and Authors
BETHESDA, MD ― The ASHP Research and Education Foundation will host a special event during the 2016 ASHP Summer Meetings to give attendees the opportunity to meet and speak with the editor and authors of the Pharmacy Forecast 2016-2020. This trends report is the newest in a series that was created to help pharmacy practice leaders plan effectively for the future. The ASHP Foundation Exchange: Pharmacy Forecast Meet and Greet will be held on June 13, 2016, from 12:30 – 1: 30 p.m., in the Baltimore Convention Center’s exhibition hall, at Booth 518.
