Description
The ASHP Foundation Medication Safety Team Grant Program: Optimizing Bedside Technology Solutions supports research related to the use of barcode scanning technology at the point of medication administration to enhance the safe use of medications. This grant program will be available to research teams composed of a combination of pharmacists, physicians, nurses or informatics experts. The research teams must include a pharmacist as a co-principal investigator.
Applications for this research grant program will be required to include objectives that relate to the use of barcode technology at the point of medication administration, rigorous research methods that support the study objectives, descriptions of interdisciplinary collaborations, mentoring activities between senior investigators and junior investigators when applicable, a description of the potential to generalize findings to other health care facilities, and an organized plan for prudent use of grant funds.
Applications for this research grant program should emphasize:
1. project objectives that address the use of barcode scanning technology at the point of medication administration;
2. sound research methods that support the study objectives;
3. interdisciplinary collaboration between pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and informatics specialists;
4. the potential for findings to be replicated in other health care facilities; and
5. prudent use of grant funds.
Preference will be given to research projects with the potential to yield strong scientific evidence that can be applied to practice.
Eligibility Criteria
The proposed research must involve the use of barcode scanning technology at the point of medication administration. In the application process and grant progress reports, evidence must be included regarding the team collaboration.
The proposed study must be submitted to an institutional review board (IRB) for approval. Evidence of IRB approval must be provided to the ASHP Research and Education Foundation upon acceptance of the grant award. Grant funds will not be disbursed until evidence of IRB approval has been received.
Funding Information
Two $40,000 grants will be awarded. Grants are awarded to investigator teams to provide funding for specific research related to the use of barcode scanning technology at the point of medication administration and are not intended for long-term support of research programs. One-third of the total grant will be provided with the notice of the award. One-third will be provided following receipt of a written progress report submitted at the midpoint of the timeline for study completion. The remaining one-third will be provided upon receipt of a final report that is due within 60 days of project completion.
