Hospital Pharmacist-Emergency Physician Collaborations
Supported by Ortho-McNeil
The application period for this research grant program is currently closed.
Description
The Hospital Pharmacist - Emergency Physician Collaborations: Improving the Care of Patients with Infectious Diseases research grant program funds the work of research teams headed by hospital pharmacists and emergency physicians conducting rigorous health services research that studies multidisciplinary initiatives related to the care of patients with infectious diseases who present to the emergency department (ED). Two $50,000 grants will be awarded.
Patients come into the ED with a wide variety of infectious diseases, including abdominal infections, meningitis, otitis media, pneumonia, and more. ED pharmacists and physicians involved in their care must address many clinical issues related to the quality, safety and cost of care. Timely diagnosis of the infectious process, antibiotic selection and use, provision of other supportive care, ongoing patient monitoring for response and adverse drug events are just some of the concerns when caring for this population.
Eligibility Criteria
The proposed research must relate to the care of patients with infectious diseases who receive care in the emergency department. The principal investigator team must be composed of a hospital pharmacist and an emergency physician. In the application process and grant progress reports, evidence must be included regarding team collaboration.
Funding Information
Two $50,000 grants will be awarded. Grants will be awarded to the research team to provide funding for specific practice-based research related to the care of patients with infectious diseases who receive care in the emergency department. One-third of the total grant will be provided upon execution of the award letter and submission of evidence of IRB approval or evidence of exemption from IRB review. One-third will be provided following receipt and ASHP Foundation acceptance of an interim research progress report and interim financial report submitted at the midpoint of the timeline for study completion. The remaining one-third will be provided upon receipt of a final research report that is due within 60 days of project completion. Facilities and administrative cost rates cannot exceed 8% of the total requested budget for direct expenses.
