James McAllister III


Jim earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his pharmacy administrative and clinical practice residency at Duke University Medical Center.

Jim held numerous positions over 28 years at Duke University Health System, including 12 years as director of pharmacy and three years as associate chief operating officer responsible for pharmacy, health-system purchasing, materials management, international business development, corporate partnership development programs and overseeing the Hospital Administration Residency Program. He is also a faculty member for the Masters in Health-System Administration.

He served as director of pharmacy at UNC Hospitals and assistant and associate dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy for nine years until he retired in 2007. Mr. McAllister has formed his own consulting company, InvictusRx, through which he offers a variety of consulting services to health-systems, colleges of pharmacy, individuals, pharmaceutical companies and other health-related clients.
Jim has served the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists as a board member and as president. He has served at the national level with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in numerous capacities for over 30 years, including multiple years as a member of its Board of Directors and as president.

He has also served as a six-year representative to the The Joint Commission of Healthcare Organizations Home Care Professional and Technical Advisory Committee and as a board member of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Mr. McAllister is a frequent lecturer domestically and internationally and has published over 100 articles and book chapters on IV admixture services, home health care, purchasing, computerization, strategic planning, professional education and many other topics. He has served as preceptor of over 150 pharmacy residents and 100 professional students.

He has been the recipient of many awards including Sister Marie Gonzales- Duffy Lecture Award, the UNC Distinguished Service Alumni Award, the United Kingdom’s Clinical Pharmacy Lecture Award, Fellow of ASHP, the Milton W Skolaut Lecture Award and pharmacy’s highest honor, the Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award.
