David Nash Receives ASHP Foundation 2024 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Preceptor Award
The ASHP Foundation is pleased to announce the 2024 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Awards recipients. This awards program, sponsored by Medi-Dose and Samson Medical Technologies, features three categories that recognize innovative and impactful pharmacy residency preceptors and programs.
This year, the Pharmacy Residency Excellence Preceptor Award recipient is David Nash, PharmD, MHA, the director of pharmacy and residency program at Children's Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Nash's teaching philosophy is simple: "Exercise curiosity, not judgment. " His application of this philosophy has fostered loyalty and respect from residents and colleagues, many of whom are now working on his team.
Preceptor Amanda Perry is one of 24 former residents now working alongside Nash who says, "This is [Nash’s] happy place, and that shows every day with his passion for our patients and their families and his continual ambition to be better."
- New Preceptor Award
Abigayle R. Campbell, PharmD
Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and Adjunct Professor,
Self Regional Healthcare
Greenwood, South Carolina
Abigayle Campbell helped establish the residency program at Self Regional, and, in her time as a preceptor, she developed an entire specialty rotation in psychiatry, providing a "safe yet realistic training environment for residents." In addition, Campbell created "project days" at least once a month between rotational months, allowing residents to "reset" before transitioning to their new rotation, reducing resident burnout and enabling residents to complete their projects earlier than expected.
"Dr. Campbell's impact extends beyond their clinical and educational roles," says current resident Khadijah Posey, PharmD. "She is compassionate and empathic and genuinely cares about the well-being of patients, students, and residents."

Sacramento, California
Rebecca Wittenberg, PharmD, Residency Program Director
Chad J. Hatfield, PharmD, MHA, Director of PharmacyThe PGY2 ambulatory care residency program at UC Davis Health is what Program Director Rebecca Wittenburg calls "a resident-led service expansion learning experience," empowering residents to lead pilots to "expand the footprint of ambulatory care pharmacists and expand patient access to care."
This innovative experience, which Director of Pharmacy Chad Hatfield calls a "beacon of excellence in pharmacy residency education training," allows residents to usher their ideas into fruition by leading meetings with stakeholders and working closely with preceptors, clinic leadership, and physicians to integrate pharmacists into the interdisciplinary care team.
"Residents are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to excel in their pharmacy careers because of the tailored longitudinal learning experiences, resident-led clinic expansion project, and the long-lasting contributions this has led to within our pharmacy department," says Hatfield.
