Pharmacists Optimizing Care of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The ASHP Foundation has awarded funding to four pharmacists through the Specialty Pharmacy Care for Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) grant program, a collaboration between the Foundation and the ASHP Section of Specialty Pharmacy Practitioners and supported by a donation from Omnicell.

The four projects funded add to the body of evidence of improvement opportunities and of specialty pharmacy's impact on the care and outcomes of patients with IBD.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are lifelong progressive disorders characterized by chronic, recurring inflammation in the gastrointestinal system. It is a global disease with significant morbidity and a substantial financial burden to individuals, families, and society. Specialty medications can relieve symptoms, slow disease progress, and induce remission.

Specialty pharmacy services based in hospitals and health systems are well-positioned to manage and optimize care across the continuum of a patient's journey and provide value to patients, providers, and stakeholders. Research that measures patient and organizational outcomes is essential to demonstrate the value of team-based, integrated specialty pharmacy services.

The awardees, each of whom received a grant of up to $10,000, are conducting research that measures patient and organizational outcomes, which is essential to demonstrating the value of pharmacy’s leadership in integrated team-based care.
