Grant Funding Awarded for Research on Early Detection of Drug-Induced Acute Kidney Injury

The ASHP Foundation is pleased to award nearly $50,000 in research funding through the Optimizing Technology Solutions Innovation Grant program to Dhakrit "Jesse" Rungkitwattanakul, PharmD from the Howard University College of Pharmacy in Washington, DC, for “Leveraging Clinical Decision Support System and Kidney Stress Biomarkers to Prevent Hospital-Acquired Acute Kidney Injury in High-Risk Populations.”

Drug-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and high treatment costs in hospitalized patients, and current methods of detection are lacking in the required sensitivity to identify early kidney damage. Rungkitwattanakul’s project will examine the impact of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) and kidney stress biomarkers to identify at-risk patients who would “otherwise go undetected.”

Supported by Omnicell, the Optimizing Technology Solutions Innovation Grant program is aligned with the ASHP Innovation Center priorities and supports pharmacist-led research that demonstrate the impact of innovative technology solutions on enhancing the safe and effective use of medications.
