Focus on Skin and Soft Tissue Infections

Medication-use evaluations (MUEs) can be part of a structured or mandated multidisciplinary quality management program that evaluates a medication’s overall value, cost-effectiveness, or impact on patient safety. The ASHP Foundation convened an advisory panel of experts to facilitate the creation of Treatment of Skin and Soft Tissue Infections in the Emergency Department: Evaluating Omadacycline Use. 

This MUE Resource Guide provides a template and implementation guide for developing an MUE of an antibiotic as part of an antibiotic stewardship program, specifically, the use of a newer antibiotic, omadacycline, approved for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, in the emergency department and urgent care setting. This project was supported by a grant from Paratek. 

As in the Foundation’s previous MUE Resource Guide, the Advisory Panel applied the FOCUS-PDCA framework outlined in the recently published ASHP Medication Use Evaluation Guidelines to a simulation to develop an MUE assessing the use of oral omadacycline in the emergency department for patients who will be discharged home. By applying the ASHP guidelines as an outpatient antibiotic stewardship initiative and customizing the template in this resource guide, organizations can optimize medication use, reduce process variation, minimize adverse events, and improve patient outcomes.
